The Elijah P. Lovejoy Memorial was founded in 1952 to perpetuate the memory of Elijah P. Lovejoy and to establish and maintain an educational scholarship fund in his memory to provide funds to assist deserving students of schools in Alton in their pursuit of a college education. The original founders of the organization were Jesse Lundun Cannon, James M. Bailey and Joseph Brewer.
The first scholarship, in the amount of $50.00 was awarded in 1954 to Sterling Scales, a graduate of Alton High School. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years of undergraduate studies provided the student carries a full academic load, maintains a "C" average and provides the Memorial with a copy of their grades each semester. The current amount of the scholarship is $5,000.00. This June, Courtney Twichell became the 66th recipient of the scholarship.
In 1987, the Memorial decided to increase it's commitment to helping high school students with their desire to earn a college degree by establishing an Academic Achievement Award. Since 1987, 89 students have received these one-time non-renewable awards.
In addition to the scholarships, the Memorial holds various programs throughout the year to perpetuate the memory and ideals of Elijah P. Lovejoy.
